DigiD in the Netherlands: What It Is & How to Apply

DigiD is the login you'll use for nearly every Dutch government service — taxes, healthcare allowance, your pension, and more. Here's when you can apply, how activation works, and what to expect.

What DigiD is

DigiD (Digitale Identiteit) is the Netherlands' official digital identity system — a single login that authenticates you across dozens of government and semi-government websites, from the Belastingdienst (tax office) to your local gemeente. Think of it as the Dutch equivalent of a government single sign-on.

When you can apply

You need a BSN and a registered Dutch address before you can apply for DigiD — so it comes after your gemeente registration, not before. If you haven't registered yet, see our BSN guide first.

How to apply and activate it

1. Go to the official DigiD website and start an application using your BSN and personal details
2. Choose a username and password
3. Wait for an activation letter containing a code, sent by post to your registered Dutch address — this typically takes a few business days
4. Enter the activation code on the DigiD website to complete setup
5. Set up the DigiD app on your phone for faster logins and two-factor confirmation, which most services now require

• Applying for huurtoeslag (rent allowance) or zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance)
• Checking your Dutch pension build-up (mijnpensioenoverzicht)
• Managing student finance through DUO
• Most gemeente services — from requesting documents to reporting a change of address

Never share your DigiD username, password, or activation code with anyone — no legitimate Dutch institution will ever ask for it by phone or email. DigiD phishing scams targeting expats are common.
